It involves a blend of skills including understanding credit products, credit and bankruptcy law, assessing a person’s financial position, personal and systemic advocacy to creditors and industry ombudsman services, and interpersonal counselling.
How to become a Financial Counsellor
In order to work as a financial counsellor you must complete the required qualification (CHC51115 Diploma of Financial Counselling), be eligible for membership of a state based financial counselling association, complete the required amount of professional development annually and receive professional supervision.
